Languages are part of the cultural richness of our society and the world in which we live and work. Learning languages contributes to mutual understanding, a sense of global citizenship and personal fulfilment. Pupils learn to appreciate different countries, cultures, communities and people. By making comparisons, they gain insight into their own culture and society. The ability to understand and communicate in another language is a lifelong skill for education, employment and leisure in this country and throughout the world.
Learning languages gives pupils opportunities to develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills and to express themselves with increasing confidence, independence and creativity. They explore the similarities and differences between other languages and English and learn how language can be manipulated and applied in different ways. The development of communication skills, together with understanding of the structure of language, lay the foundations for future study of other languages and support the development of literacy skills in a pupil’s own language.

Key Stage 4
What will my child learn in French / Spanish GCSE
Students will learn to communicate in French Spanish on a range of topics, some of which they will have met already at in years 7,8. For example, lifestyle (health and relationships) and leisure (free time and holidays).
Key Stage 5
What will my child learn in A-Level French/Spanish
These courses are designed to enable students to communicate confidently and clearly in French/Spanish, both through the spoken and written word.
This modern course will involve the study of contemporary language in writing and speech. The teaching and study will be topic-based. Various topics are studied in the first year including:
Media/Popular Culture/Healthy Living/Lifestyle/Family/Relationships
This opens up the possibility of studying film, literature, history, technology and any other aspect of the culture that may inspire students at A level.
Methods of learning include pair work, group work and independent work. You will develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills and use will be made of a variety of sources, such as magazines, newspapers, books, recorded news items, talks and discussions. During the lessons emphasis will be placed on communication in German, on oral work, the giving and seeking of opinions, feelings and personal interests.
