Practice Expedition DofE Bronze Award

Practice Expedition DofE Bronze Award 21–22 April 2018 Bury Down to Court Hill on the Ridgeway

On what was then the hottest weekend of the year, a group of 26 enthusiastic Larkmead Year 10 students took part in their DofE Bronze Practice Award Expedition. This was the culmination of months of planning and training by the students during after school sessions on Friday afternoons and on several Saturday’s when students learnt camp craft, map reading and hiking skills. Working in small groups, and supported by a dedicated bunch of leaders, the students had to navigate their way from Bury Down to their overnight camp at Courthill Centre near Wantage.

After walking a grueling 10 miles on Saturday where the students had to cope with very hot weather conditions as well as carrying heavy rucksacks, they all arrived at Courthill in record time. Students made camp, cooked food and then set about exploring their surroundings. There followed an eventful night of group games, a camp fire and toasted marshmallows. We were then all treated to a spectacular display of thunder and lightning across what seemed like the whole of Oxfordshire, even though our campsite stayed dry. The storm finally hit us in the late hours with torrential rain and lightning flashes and thunder to keep us all in our tents. After surviving the night, the students were up early cooking and packing up and all groups had left by an impressive 9.00am.

The leaders all agreed that this was an awesome group of students who were a real credit to the school, so polite and well mannered, determined, showing great teamwork and a real pleasure to be with. Students are looking forward to their qualifying weekend in May at Youlbury.

You too can join DofE and have fun and learn new skills, as well as earning an award that will help with future employment, college or university applications.

DofE would not be able to run at Larkmead if it were not for the help of our many unpaid volunteers; we would like to say thanks to Jude & Anthony Yates, Phil & Yvonne Giddings, Stuart Broad, Janice Thompson, Jacqui &Terry Graham.
