Oxfordshire Book Awards 2016
Book Club members past and present attended The Oxfordshire Book Awards Ceremony for 2015-16 on Wednesday 9th November at Oxford High School. Mark Thornton from Mostly Books Bookshop in Abingdon performed the Master of Ceremonies for the event with great ease, humour and professionalism.
As part of the event there were presentations, author talks, illustrator doodles and the obligatory CAKE for afternoon tea! Students were also able to purchase books for author’s signature too!
Larkmead School Book Club supports the Oxfordshire Book Awards each year, whereby, pupils from participating Oxfordshire schools nominate their favourite books from a long-list put together by librarians. Nominations are then counted from which the shortlist is compiled and books are read and discussed in Book Club. Each student then votes for their favourite book from the shortlist.
The winner of the Secondary Category of the Oxfordshire Book Awards for 2015-16 was:
The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson
The actor turned author’s sensitive and engaging portrait of a transgender teen is impressive and affecting. Look out for her new book in February 2017 entitled ‘All About Mia’. Lisa spoke of Rebecca Stead, one of her favourite author’s who had inspired her to write.
The Highly Commended Secondary Book was:
Mind Games by Teri Terry
A futuristic psychological thriller from Teri Terry, following her award-winning SLATED trilogy.
Teri encouraged all to read and write as much as you can, keeping a diary or notebook of ideas.
Both highly worthy winners and voted for by our students.
