Nicki Thornton Talk in the LRC – 28th Sept

Nicki Thornton, 2016 Winner of the Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction Competition will be here in the LRC to host the first of our Lunchtime Talks;  there’ll be mystery and magic!

In this interactive talk, children’s book expert, Nicki, will be talking to students about her debut novel The Last Chance Hotel – An Agatha Christie meets Harry Potter with a dash of Robin Stevens Mystery – that will leave students brimming with their own ideas for creating a mystery story.

Seth is the downtrodden kitchen boy at the remote Last Chance Hotel, owned by the nasty Bunn family. His only friend is his black cat, Nightshade. But when a strange gathering of magicians arrives for dinner, kindly Dr Thallomius is poisoned by Seth’s special dessert.  A murder investigation ensues – and Seth is the main suspect. The funny thing is, he’s innocent … can he solve the mystery and clear his name, especially when magic’s afoot?

Nicki will talk about herself, her background as a bookseller and her journey to writing her successful debut novel ‘The Last Chance Hotel’, before telling students about the magical mystery in her own story.  She will talk about some of her favourite stories, ask students about their favourites, and work with the audience to explore how to build their own fictional detective.

Nicki lives in Abingdon and was a co-founder and owner of independent bookshop, Mostly Books, until May 2017.

Larkmead School alongside Mostly Books welcome students to attend Nicki’s talk with the opportunity of purchasing a signed copy of her book at a discounted price of £6 (RRP £6.99).  As we are a cashless school, all funds are to be paid to Mostly Books on the day, either in cash or by cheque (payable to Mostly Books).

Please encourage your child to register, in the LRC, for the talk. The booking form can be downloaded below.

We hope that your child will enjoy the experience of meeting such an inspiring author.
