Extra Curricular @ Larkmead

Larkmead School recognises that the school experience should be as wide-ranging and varied as possible, offering opportunities for growth as an individual and as part of the community through a wide variety of activities and contexts.

Physical Education

Physical Education is an important part of the curriculum for all students and we are committed to the philosophy of "Sport for All".  We believe in developing excellence and the value of competitive sport, but we also seek to instil an appreciation of the enjoyment and health benefits that a life-long involvement in physical activity can bring.

Extra Curricular Activities

All students are encouraged to join our rich programme of extra curricular activities and this is recognised through the rewards scheme.  Students can take part in activities and performances in Dance, Drama and Music, and a host of other activities are offered from the Carnegie Book Award Shadowing Group to Tae Kwan Do.

Outdoor Activities

Alongside the wide range of team sports, students can take part in other activities, including the School Sailing Club which enjoys the superb facilities offered by the Oxford and District Schools' Sailing Association at Farmoor Reservoir.  The popular Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is offered to students in Year 9 and above and includes leisure, recreational and outdoor activities, alongside the opportunity for students to become involved in service to the community.

World Challenge

Following a highly successful World Challenge Expedition to Zambia, students set their sights on another challenge to Vietnam.  This will involve students raising £3,000 through sponsorship and hard work.  Students will learn about Vietnamese culture and develop their leadership skills in an experience that will stay with them forever.

Visits

The school offers an ambitious programme of visits both at home and abroad.  Recent visits have included the Stock Exchange, the Tate Gallery, the national Science Museum, Theatre visits to London and Stratford, Oxford Colleges, Universities, Cotswold Wildlife Park and a host of other exciting destinations.  Overseas Visits include destinations in France, Germany and Belgium.  A ski trip each year to Austria is a great success.

Residential Education

Larkmead attaches great importance to the range of residential experiences it offers.  These are designed to encourage personal and social development by giving opportunities to be away as a group experiencing some independence from home.  Some of these courses are closely related to specific subjects such as the Battle Fields tour and the Geography trip to the Netherlands.  Other trips make use of the Oxfordshire Outdoor Education Centres where students can take part in adventure activities such as canoeing and climbing under the expert care of trained staff.

Activities Week

The school is very proud of the final week of the year, where our whole philosophy is encapsulated as students participate in an array of on and off site activities, offering experiences and opportunities that students will remember long after they have left Larkmead.  The activities range from arts based activities in keeping with our specialism to extreme physical challenges such as mountain biking, kayaking and climbing to trips abroad.  The year ends on an exciting note of adventure and challenge for students and staff alike.
