DofE Bronze Award Expeditions
Practice Expedition DofE Bronze Award 25 – 26 March 2017 Streatley to Court Hill on the Ridgeway
Over the weekend of 25 and 26 March 2017, 26 of Larkmead’s Year 10 students took part in their DofE Bronze Practice Award Expedition camping at Court Hill Centre. Working in small groups, students had to navigate their way from Streatley to their overnight camp at Courthill Centre near Wantage.
Walking more than 20 miles was a challenge for students but despite blisters they all handled it like true professionals and completed their practice expedition.
Qualifying Expedition DofE Bronze Award 6 – 7 May 2017 Duxford to Youlbury
Over the weekend of 6th and 7th May 2017, 26 of Larkmead’s Year 10 students took part in their DofE Bronze Award Expedition. Working in small groups, students had to navigate their way from Duxford on the Thames (near Southmoor) to their overnight camp at Youlbury on Boars Hill, completing their journey on Sunday by walking along the Thames path to Wytham.
In beautiful weather, all 26 students completed their Qualifying expedition and passed their Expedition section. Many of the students enjoyed the experience so much they were eager to progress to their silver award.
Here are a selection of comments from the students about the two expeditions; Solidified friendships, confidence building, did things they didn’t think they could do, made new friends, deepened friendships, great feeling of achievement, proud, realised they can do more than they thought, ambitious, happier to communicate with the public, enjoyed not having social media and found country people very sociable.
The DofE Assessor was very impressed with the student’s enthusiasm and their determination to succeed. He commented that they were an impressive group who encouraged each other and really were a credit to Larkmead!
DofE is proving to be very popular amongst students at Larkmead. Each year we have more students wanting to join the Bronze Award and increasing numbers wanting to progress to Silver where we have hosted expeditions in the Peak District National Park and in Dorset, whilst one of our recent Silver Award students has now completed his Gold award. DofE is an asset when applying to college, University, and future job prospects. DofE has become an important part of our school community at Larkmead.
We will shortly be enrolling students for our next Bronze and Silver Award programmes.
DofE would not be able to run at Larkmead if it were not for the help of our many volunteers; we would like to say thanks to Jude & Anthony Yates, Phil & Yvonne Giddings, Stuart Broad, Janice Thompson, Jacqui &Terry Graham.
